CHAKRAS

chakras

Chakra means wheel in Sanskrit. These are the controlling centres of the Nadi (channels of energy which can be roughly translated as nerves) that controls organs a well. There are numerous chakras in the body, however the major ones are seven in number. Uninterrupted flow of energy through chakras is important for physical and mental wellbeing. Each chakra has specific location (in spine), shape (denoted by number of petals) and role in certain body functions.

MULADHARA (ROOT CHAKRA)

The root chakra is located at the base of the spine, giving us the foundation and the ability to be grounded. This chakra is related to physical identity and survival instincts, so can be influenced by fear and ignorance It is related the element of ‘Earth” the heaviest element. At physical level, the root chakra is related to excretion and adrenals. The block of root chakra can result in constipation, arthritis, colon and bladder diseases and insecurities. Red is the colour of root chakra and it has four petals. When open and aligned, root chakra brings stability, feeling grounded and energy both physically and emotionally.

SWADISHTANA (SACRAL CHAKRA)

The sacral chakra is located just below navel and is related to reproductive and sexual health. It is the chakra of creativity, intuition, connection and emotions. This chakra is related to the element of Water. When blocked, sacral chakra can cause infertility, impotence, urinary tract problems, reproductive system diseases and attachment issues. The colour of this chakra is orange, the colour of rising sun and it has 6 petals. When open and in alignment this chakra results in self-worth especially around pleasure and creativity.

MANIPURAKA (THE SOLAR CHAKRA)

Manipuraka also known as Manipura, is located behind the navel and is related to ego and metabolism, forming the base of maintenance. This chakra is related to the element of Fire and when blocked results in digestive disorders, affects pancreas, and results in anger and a sense of victimisation. The colour of this Chakra is yellow and it has 10 petals. When open and aligned, Manipuraka brings energy, effectiveness and non-dominating power.

Muladhara and swadishtana is responsible for creation and foundation and Manipuraka related to maintenance, and there by forming three lower energy centres.

ANAHATA (HEART CHAKRA)

Anahata is located at the center of the chest and is related to love, heart plexus, circulation, and thymus. This chakra is related to the element of ‘Air’ and when blocked results in a lack of compassion, heart diseases, and immunity disorders. It is green in color and has 12 petals, this is the central chakra connecting the lower energy chakras to higher energy chakras. When open and in alignment, this chakra results in spirituality, the ability to love deeply, feel compassion, and a deep sense of calmness and centeredness.

VISHUDHA (THROAT CHAKRA)

It is located at the base of the throat and related to communication; speaking, hearing, respiratory system, thyroid and creativity. It is related the Element of ‘Space’ and when blocked results in communication, respiratory, thyroid and neck problems. It is bright blue in colour and has 16 chakras. When in balance, throat chakra supports effective communication with love and compassion.

AJNA (THE THIRD EYE CHAKRA)

It is located between the eyebrows and is the seat of consciousness. The block of this chakra results in the inability to see in the big picture, connect with their intuition or understand reality, headache, sinusitis, or vision problems. The color of this chakra is Indigo and it has 2 petals. When in balance, this chakra results in higher concentration and awareness.

SAHASRARA (CROWN CHAKRA)

It is located at the top of the head and related to one’s personal spiritual connection to the universe. Physically it is related to the cerebrum, voluntary nervous system, and pineal gland. It has a thousand petals and is violet in color. Its blockage causes mental diseases and when open, Sahasrara chakra results in knowledge, wisdom, bliss, understanding, and spiritual connection.
